UV Photolysis vs. Carbon Adsorption vs. Scrubbing: Choosing VOC & Odor Treatment

Three technologies dominate industrial VOC and odor control at the scale most factories need: UV photolysis, activated carbon adsorption and wet scrubbing. Vendors tend to sell whichever one they make. Since we build all three, here is the honest comparison we give our own customers.

Wet Scrubbing: for Soluble and Reactive Gases

If the pollutant dissolves or reacts — HCl, NH₃, H₂S with hypochlorite, acid mists — a packed tower is the cheapest kilogram-for-kilogram removal you can buy, and it handles humid, warm gas without complaint. What it won’t do is touch hydrophobic VOCs like toluene: they pass straight through water.

UV Photolysis: for Continuous Odor Streams

UV-C lamps crack molecular bonds and generate ozone that keeps oxidizing in the duct. There is nothing to refill and pressure drop is negligible, which makes UV attractive for continuously running odor sources — rendering, flavoring, wastewater air. Two cautions: it needs seconds of residence time to work, and heavily loaded solvent streams overwhelm it. Treat UV as a strong mid-stage, not a silver bullet.

Activated Carbon: the Guarantee Stage

Carbon physically holds VOC molecules until you swap the media, which makes it the only stage whose performance you can bank on for a stack test. The economics are all about loading: carbon polishing a pre-treated stream lasts months; carbon fighting raw solvent exhaust saturates in days and becomes an expensive habit.

How We Combine Them

  • Acid fume only: scrubber tower, done.
  • Paint / printing VOC: filter for overspray → UV photolysis → carbon polish. Each stage extends the next one’s life.
  • Rendering / wastewater odor: scrubber with oxidant dosing → UV; carbon only where neighbors are very close.
  • Mixed acid + solvent: scrubber first (it also cools and humidifies for free), then dry the stream’s expectations before carbon.
