What’s Inside a Packaged Wastewater Treatment Plant?

“Packaged plant” sounds like a black box: sewage in, clean water out. In reality it is a full treatment works folded into one tank, and knowing what is inside helps you buy the right size — and run it well for the next decade.

The Zones, in Order

  1. Screening / equalization — a basket screen catches rags; the EQ zone smooths the morning surge so biology sees a steady diet.
  2. Anoxic zone (the “A”) — mixed but unaerated; returning nitrate is converted to nitrogen gas here, which is how total nitrogen actually drops.
  3. Aeration zone (the “O”) — blowers feed fine-bubble diffusers under a bed of bio-carrier media; this is where COD and ammonia are consumed.
  4. Clarifier or MBR membranes — either a tube-settler zone returns sludge and decants clear water, or a membrane rack filters it outright for reuse-grade effluent.
  5. Disinfection — chlorine tablet feeder or UV, depending on your discharge permit.
  6. Sludge pocket — stabilized sludge accumulates for months between pump-outs; a vacuum truck handles the rest.

A/O or MBR?

The A/O + clarifier version is cheaper, tolerant and easy to run — right for villages, camps and workshops discharging to a sewer or watercourse under standard limits. MBR costs more upfront and asks for membrane cleaning discipline, but its effluent is clear enough for irrigation and flushing reuse, and the tank gets smaller because biomass runs denser. If your permit quotes reuse or Class-1A-type limits, that is MBR territory.

Sizing Honestly

Count people and fixtures, not optimism: 150–250 L per person per day covers most residential-type use; restaurants and laundries add fast. Then add 20% headroom — biology forgives underloading far more gracefully than overloading. A 50 m³/day plant loafing at 35 will outlive a 30 m³/day plant drowning at 40.

What Arrives on the Truck

Our plants ship as one coated-steel tank with internals fitted, blowers and control panel mounted, and diffusers plumbed. Site work is an excavated pit with a concrete slab (or a surface skid), pipe connections, and power. Commissioning is mostly patience: seeding sludge and two to four weeks of ramp-up while the biology moves in.
